Summer is around the corner. And, one of summer’s joys is those cool, fruit smoothies we love to drink. Please read this email I received from Joel before you do decide to have one of these “healthy” fruit smoothies! I always check the nutritional values of any special drink offered by fast food restaurants… be it smoothies, Ice Cafes, Ice Caps, and any other special drinks. So far, they have all been laden with sugar! It’s easy to check the nutritional component of a drink, just google the company, and nutritional values, and there they are 🙂 It’s worth it!
If your goals is to lose weight and get healthy, you’d probably never reach for a can of soda pop. After all, that can of soda has a whopping 40 grams of sugar in most cases, and that’s not doing your hips, butt, thighs and waistline any favors.
But, what may SHOCK you is that something that people reach for all the time to support their weight loss goals — a fruit smoothie — can actually have THREE TIMES MORE sugar than a can of soda if you’re buying one of these so-called “healthy” beverages at your local smoothie shop.
To illustrate the point, while out running errands over the weekend my good friend Mike wanted to stop off at Smoothie King for a healthy mid-afternoon snack. In order to show him just how BAD of an idea that was, I pulled up the Smoothie Kind menu on my phone.
You see, if you chose their Orange Ka-Bam® smoothie from their “Stay Healthy” category, you’d be sucking down 108 grams of sugar in a SMALL sized smoothie. And, by the way, they are a whopping 320 calories!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
No, I’m not.
Perhaps we should look to their “Trim Down” category for something more suitable for someone who doesn’t want to add slabs of fat to their mid-section.
Oh look, the Strawberry Kiwi Breeze® flavor only has 84 grams of sugar and the Passion Passport® just 93 grams of sugar!
My goodness, let’s look to their Shape Up category…perhaps you’re in the mood for 125 grams of sugar in their Hulk Strawberry smoothie!
Or how about their Grape Expectations II flavor from their “Snack Right” menu…only 125 grams of sugar there, too!
Of course, I’m being extremely sarcastic…these sugar values are almost unheard of. In fact, I don’t even know where you can get that much sugar in one serving of anything, except for in a “healthy” fruit smoothie.
If you want a fruit smoothie, please, STEER CLEAR of these smoothie shops serving up sugar-laden, waist-expanding beverages…they are BAD NEWS for your health and your fat loss goals. Truth is, you don’t even need that much sugar in a WEEK, yet alone a single meal or beverage. Instead, try a real fruit smoothie that isn’t loaded with sugar, and add some protein while you’re at it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a delicious fruit smoothie just as well as the next guy or gal, but I’ve yet to find a smoothie shop that does it right.
And even worse are the “smoothies” you’ll find on the menus at fast food restaurants…AVOID those like the plague! Just because it says “smoothie” doesn’t make it healthy! In fact, 99% of smoothies are far from it.
